The demand for bigger lips has grown majorly over recent years, there’s no denying it. And while social media and the Jenner/Kardashian clan may have much to do with this need for a plumper pout, gargantuan advances in aesthetic technologies mean that minimally-invasive procedures such as lip injections are better, more natural-looking and more affordable than ever.
The thing is, lip fillers are not to be taken lightly. Left in the wrong hands, they can offer real risks to your appearance (and even your health), so if you fancy upping your lip game, here are a few important facts to read up on first.
1. So, What Are Lip Fillers, Anyway?
Lip fillers are liquid gels that are injected into the skin to smooth and soften lines around the mouth, and/or increase volume. During a typical procedure, the aesthetician will first mark up the treatment area, before carefully injecting a small needle filled with the gel-like substance into your lips. This gel is gently worked under the skin before moving onto the next injection. And so on and so forth. A procedure usually takes around an hour, and, although there may be a little bruising, you’ll be able to leave the office right away and go about your normal routine. Yes, your lips will be immediately plumper, but if you’ve gone the subtle route (which we’d always recommend) nobody will know what you’ve been up to.
2. What Are Your Options?
We believe the best and most effective fillers for lip enhancement are hyaluronic acid-based. Our favorite, FDA-approved HA fillers include Restylane Silk, Belotero Balance and Juvéderm Volbella. Still confused by which brand to choose? Don’t be. Choosing the best aesthetician is WAY more important than the type of filler they use.
“Always choose your injector first, then together you can discuss your options. An experienced, artistic injector can do great things with fillers, but similarly, fillers can have very mediocre results in the hands of someone inexperienced.’Dr. Eric Mariotti, HintMD partner and board-certified plastic surgeon in Walnut Creek, California.
3. How Do You Avoid The Trout Pout?
As with all types of aesthetic procedures, being prepared is key. Do your research and only have your treatment administered by a fully qualified, board-certified injector who understands the symmetry and ratios of lips. Naturally, the bottom lip is two-thirds bigger than the top lip, so this needs to be maintained even when fullness has been added.
You should also ease yourself in gently, especially if your lips are naturally very thin. By all means, consult your aesthetician about the look you want to achieve, but be willing to make compromises and always err on the side of caution. Like great Botox and the perfect haircut, lip fillers should work to balance the rest of your face.
4. Do Lip Injections Hurt?
OK, so here’s the thing: lips are much more delicate and sensitive to pain than the skin on the rest of your face. So, sticking needles in your lips? Well, it’s no walk in the park. The good news, however, is that most lip fillers come paired with an anesthesia to gradually numb your lips during the procedure. If you’ve also spent time to find an experienced aesthetician, they will be a dab hand at making the experience as painless as possible (with the help of extra, topical anesthetics and ice if you need it).
5. How Long Do Results Last?
All fillers require maintenance and upkeep, so if you want to keep your results looking as great as possible, you should revisit your injector at least every six months depending on the type of filler you go for. The easiest way to do this? Sign up for an aesthetic subscription. Need you really ask? 😉
