It’s a well-known saying that you can tell a lot about a person when you look into their eyes, and while we don’t disagree, you can also tell a lot about a person when you look at the skin around their eyes;)
Thin, fragile and prone to severe dryness, the skin around the eyes ages much quicker than the skin on the rest of your face. It also gets a vigorous, daily workout due to squinting, frowning and constant movement from various facial muscles, which work like a finely-tuned army to exacerbate crepiness, fine lines and wrinkles.
Because of these factors, the skin around the eyes requires tender loving care if you want to fight the visible signs of aging. At home, invest in a medical-grade eye cream – these generally contain more moisturizing ingredients than face creams – and pay specific attention to areas of concern. Are you worried about dark circles? Hollowed undereyes getting your goat? Then think about including one of the following in-office procedures in your treatment plan. The solutions are right there, so it’d be foolish not to get on board, right?
1. Rectify Hollowed Undereyes With: Restylane
With time comes volume loss and thinning to the skin under the eyes. This can cause a hollowed, translucent appearance and permanent shadows that no amount of sleep can shake off. But all is not lost because one of the most exciting cosmetic treatments for taking years off hollowed eyes is Restylane.
When injected into the orbital area, this safe and effective hyaluronic acid filler plumps up lost volume and fills in surrounding fine lines and wrinkles without paralyzing facial muscles the way injectable toxins, such as Botox do. Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance with molecules that can hold 1000 times their weight in water to keep skin tissues super-hydrated. The hyaluronic acid used in Restylane is almost identical to the natural hyaluronic acid already existing in your body which means it’s not animal-derived and does not contain animal proteins that often trigger unwanted reactions. Love. That.
Results from Restylane are instant and they yield a soft, natural and lifted correction to sunken undereyes. Oh, and did we mention Restylane can also brighten discolorations around the eyes? Big win.
2. Add Instant Youthfulness With: Latisse
Latisse is a topical prescription medication available at the doctor’s office that promotes your natural eyelashes (and even your eyebrows) to grow longer, fuller and darker. All factors that give your appearance an instant youthful edge if we’re not mistaken.
Latisse works by making all the hairs stay in a particular part of the hair growth cycle called the anagen phase. This lengthens the growth cycle phase so the hairs just keep on growing. Simple, right? It takes about six to eight weeks to see real results but at this point you’ll most certainly notice a remarkable difference to your lashes.
While Latisse is medically indicated for patients with inadequate lashes due to medical conditions, it’s awesome for amping up your eyes ‘just because.’ And in the last few years, the makeover magic of Latisse has extended beyond mega-lashes to creating fuller eyebrows, too. It’s still only FDA-approved for use on the upper eyelashes, but plenty of doctors give it to patients to revive overplucked brows, and many women are loving its ability to achieve dream-worthy arches. Decisions, decisions.
3. Lift Droopy Eyelids With: A Botox Brow Lift
As facial skin ages, it loses collagen which supports the skin like a scaffold and helps keep it tight, firm and youthful-looking. This is why mature skin becomes lax and starts to sag. Couple this with muscle tone loss, fat pad loss and years of continued frowning which pulls the skin down and it’s no wonder those poor eyelids start to droop.
Historically, surgery was the only option for saggy eyelids (see below), but these days such drastic action isn’t always necessary. Say hello to the ‘Botox brow lift,’ one of Botox’s more recent notches in its belt and a fantastic alternative to invasive procedures.
A Botox brow lift procedure works by carefully injecting small amounts of Botox into the muscles that depress the brow. This causes the brow to rest and relax in a lifted position. Simple. Botox can similarly be administered to reshape your eyebrows if that’s what you’re in the market for. Hello, perfect red-carpet arches – buh-bye straight, angry brows.
The process takes around 15-20 minutes and, although it’s almost painless, if you’re a sensitive soul, your injector may apply numbing cream prior to your treatment. Aaaand breathe…
4. Say Goodbye To Persistent Undereye Bags With: Blepharoplasty
If your peepers look permanently pooped due to seriously fleshy, sagging eyelid skin, blepharoplasty – or simply put, an eyelift– might be your best option.
An eyelift is a one-to-three hour outpatient procedure, meaning it’s typically performed in a day clinic or at your doctor’s office, and you’ll be out the same day. The procedure rarely needs to be repeated but of course, you can still expect your eyes to age as usual. Yes, you’ll look exponentially improved for at least a decade, but there’s no fooling Mother Nature long-term…
During a lower blepharoplasty, fat in the lower eyelids (affectionately known as ‘bags’) is removed or repositioned through a small incision at the lashline that will essentially be hidden in the inner surface of the eyelid (ps: laser resurfacing or a chemical peel can also be performed to smooth and tighten skin on the lower lid).
Immediately after the procedure, your surgeon may apply tiny sterile bandages and you’ll be given an ointment and maybe some eye drops to prevent dryness of the eye. Swelling and bruising are perfectly normal and cold compresses will become your new best friend. Medication will be prescribed to help you manage any discomfort and stitches will be removed in three to five days after surgery. Your recovery time will probably be around four weeks, but visit an experienced, board-certified surgeon and you won’t regret it.
5. Tighten Loose, Sagging Skin With: Ultherapy
If you suffer from trypanophobia (a fear of needles and injections, don’t you know?), lasers or energy-harnessing treatments might be more your thing. And we’ve got just the guy for the job if you’re looking to treat aging skin around your eyes: Ultherapy.
More than a million Ultherapy treatments have been performed worldwide, which makes it a tried, tested and extremely trusted procedure in our books. The treatment uses ultrasound energy to lift, tone and tighten the skin and has been FDA-cleared for use not only on the eyebrows, but under the chin, on the neck and over the chest area. It works by stimulating collagen production below the surface of the skin at just the right depths and exactly the right temperature to jumpstart regeneration and therefore skin rejuvenation. The benefits of ultherapy can be seen immediately, but your best results will start to appear over two to three months making it the king of ‘nobody will ever know’ treatments at the doctor’s office 😉
